Solar PV Installation for James Hargreaves (Plumbers Merchants) Ltd

Centreco supported James Hargreaves (Plumbers Merchants) Ltd—the UK’s largest independent suppliers of plumbing, heating, and bathroom materials—by installing a tailored, on-site solar energy system at its national headquarters, helping them take a major step towards long-term sustainability and energy independence.

Delivering sustainable energy for James Hargreaves (Plumbers Merchants) Ltd

A trusted name in the UK’s plumbing, heating and bathroom materials market, the 102-year-old company operates a nationwide network of 73 branches. The directors were looking to take control of rising energy costs, step forward with their sustainability ambitions and futureproof their head office in terms of energy strategy.

Background

Faced with increasing pressure from rising electricity costs and price volatility in the UK energy market, the business also wanted to reduce its carbon footprint, aligning with its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable growth.

Previously relying entirely on the national grid for its electricity, the company sought a cleaner, more cost-effective way to power its operations and reduce grid dependency. Other key project requirements included a relatively short payback period, minimal disruption to daily operations during installation and a technically capable partner to deliver the project seamlessly, end-to-end.

Centreco was selected based on its professional approach. James Hargreaves (Plumbers Merchants) Ltd, Low Carbon Technical Heating Sales Manager, Scott Wright, explains:

“Right from initial engagement, Centreco stood out. Their proposal documentation was comprehensive and transparent, providing everything we needed to make an informed decision. Of course, we conducted our own due diligence too, including reviewing case studies and client testimonials.

They’ve completed hundreds of similar successful installations across the UK, giving us confidence that we were in safe hands. What impressed us was their professionalism throughout the process, especially the proactive communication and their ability to understand our operational and financial needs.”

Our Solution

Following a comprehensive consultation, Centreco worked closely with the team at James Hargreaves to understand their operational energy use, business priorities and site-specific requirements at the Burnley head office.

We designed a bespoke commercial solar PV system to offset a significant proportion of the site’s annual electricity usage, and one capable of measurable energy and carbon savings. The total system size amounted to 206.25 kW, comprising 497 Longi 415W Panels and six Solis S5 inverters, specified across four of the site’s buildings—the showroom, mill, warehouse, and workshop.

The installation was carefully scheduled to avoid disruption to the company’s key operational hours, ensuring critical deliveries and day-to-day business were maintained without interruption.

The Centreco team managed the entire process from start to finish, including system design and planning, DNO applications, structural survey and reports and planning application through to installation, commissioning, DNO witness test and handover. Centreco then ensured that James Hargreaves staff had training on both the use of the system and full access to the free of charge solar monitoring system.

The Results

Since switching to on-site solar generation, James Hargreaves has seen an immediate and noticeable reduction in its energy costs, directly making a positive impact on the company’s operational bottom line. In the first quarter alone, the system generated almost £6,000 in total savings. Apart from mitigating exposure to future energy price volatility, the installation has improved cost control and enhanced long-term business resilience.

By generating renewable energy at source, the company has also taken a bold step forward in strengthening its sustainability credentials, positively influencing stakeholder perceptions, especially in the eyes of customers and staff.

Feedback from employees has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing pride in the company’s proactive commitment to sustainability. Customers have responded favourably as well, particularly those who prioritise partnerships with environmentally responsible companies.

“Centreco impressed us. With their structured project management approach, regular and clear communication and flexibility in scheduling, disruption was minimal.

For us, solar was the only viable renewable energy solution. But it wasn’t just about reducing our energy costs; it was about building business resilience and enhancing brand trust.

The results have been exactly as promised – some great savings to our bottom line and an innovative project that genuinely supports our long-term sustainability strategy.”Scott Wright

No Falls Week Feature

Safety in Focus: Centreco’s Lifesaving Approach to Working at Height

In support of No Falls Week, a nationwide campaign to raise awareness and reduce falls from height, Centreco is spotlighting the role of rigorous safety protocols and a strong culture of care in preventing incidents before they occur.

At Centreco, safety is more than policy, it’s a culture, and it’s embedded into every decision made on-site.

Working at Height: Safety by Design

Centreco adheres strictly to the Working at Height Hierarchy of Control, tailoring our approach to suit the variety of roof profiles and working environments our teams encounter. Whether it’s a steep apex or a low-pitch structure, collective edge protection, such as certified scaffolding, robust guardrails, and toe board, is a non-negotiable requirement before any work begins.

All activities are underpinned by:

  • Thorough planning led by Project Managers who ensure competent personnel and sound site preparation.
  • On-site leadership by Supervisors / Team Leaders who carry out pre-use, in progress and post-task inspections.
  • Trained operatives empowered to stop work if conditions aren’t safe.
  • A dedicated internal HSE Team to support in the planning and mitigation of risks from height

Our rooftop edge protection systems are installed by competent persons to meet BS EN 13374:2013 standards, and we work exclusively with approved scaffolding and access partners to maintain consistency and integrity in edge protection design and more generally for fall protection and safe access for working at height across our projects

Listening to Our Teams

Continuous improvement is at the heart of our approach. We regularly gather feedback from site teams who report feeling significantly safer with the evolving standards. Many have shared that improvements to edge protection, clear procedural guidance, and site-specific planning have not only reduced risk but improved morale and confidence while working at height.

Safety Is the Starting Point

We’ve also introduced innovations such as QR code-based hazard reporting, enabling quick and easy escalation of potential issues on-site. Every submission is tracked and reviewed, with clear accountability assigned to ensure timely follow-up and close-out by management. This not only improves visibility but strengthens our culture of accountability and shared responsibility across all levels of the organisation.

At Centreco, the message is simple and firm: If the safety measures aren’t in place, the work doesn’t start. This principle (the Certas Energy Safety 1st Vision Zero framework) has prevented countless potential incidents, reinforcing that a proactive approach to safety protects both people and projects.

Throughout No Falls Week, Centreco is proud to stand alongside industry peers in promoting greater awareness of working at height risks. We’re using this opportunity to drive targeted conversations across our sites, distribute updated safety materials, and reinforce critical behaviours through toolbox talks and engagement activities. By aligning with the resources and messaging from the official campaign—available at https://www.nofallsweek.org—we’re strengthening our ongoing commitment to safety and prevention.

80% OF UK COMMERCIAL PROPERTIES AT RISK: HOW LANDLORDS CAN STAY AHEAD OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY REGULATIONS

As The Times reported recently, more than 80 per cent of all commercial properties in England will effectively be rendered unlettable from 2030 without substantial investment if proposed Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) regulation changes take effect.

Beyond legal compliance, enhancing an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating presents an opportunity for commercial landlords to reduce energy costs, attract high-quality tenants and protect long-term property value. Here, we talk to David Stretch, our Head of Customer Real Estate Solutions, who offers one practical step commercial landlords can take to improve EPC ratings and shares how Centreco renewable energy solutions can help in the long term.

Why is the 80% statistic such a wake-up call for commercial landlords?

It’s staggering. It highlights the sheer scale of commercial properties that will fall short of meeting potential future EPC requirements.

Currently, (April 2025), commercial and industrial rented properties are required to have an EPC rating of E or above.

By April 2027, it is understood that properties will need to meet an interim target of at least EPC C, and by, 2030, an EPC rating of B or above to remain lettable with commercial landlords facing financial penalties and potential asset devaluation if they fail to comply.

The government’s recommendations on energy efficiency requirements are still under review, with changes expected by the end of 2025. However, as reported in The Times article, what is clear is that many commercial properties are still falling short – struggling to meet even an E or a D rating, let alone a C.

What are the biggest challenges in improving EPC ratings?

Many of the commercial landlords we speak to worry about upfront costs, disruption to tenants and confusion over what might be the best solution to future proof their portfolios. However, a strategic, phased approach that starts with high-impact, low-disruption upgrades can make the challenge more manageable and can offer an attractive financial proposition.

Technologies like solar energy can provide an immediate win with a strong return on investment (ROI) and a fast payback period.

How does solar energy fit into an EPC improvement plan?

A commercial solar energy system will provide a direct uplift in the energy performance of a building, making it one of the most effective first steps to take towards improving a property’s EPC rating.

Energy independence and lowers operational costs

A Centreco solar energy system generates consistent renewable energy on-site, reducing reliance on expensive grid electricity.

To put it into context. A rooftop or ground-mounted system can generate electricity at an equivalent cost rate of 2-4p per kWh, over a 25-year-plus period. Significantly lower than current grid rates, which are averaging 20-30p per kWh (as of April 2025).

Additional revenue stream

This opens an opportunity whereby landlords can sell the energy generated by the Centreco solar energy system to their tenants, with the positive differential to grid pricing, the tenant can be offered low cost renewable energy and the commercial landlord can make an attractive yield whilst improving the energy rating of the property.

Win-win for tenants

Tenants save on their energy bills and gain long term protection from energy inflation by avoiding fluctuating energy costs and sudden price spikes.

Are there any other benefits to an improved EPC rating for a commercial landlord?

Beyond helping to avoid legal and financial penalties by contributing to a higher EPC rating, a solar energy system also enhances property value and marketability, making it easier to attract and retain tenants and, notably, more appealing to funders and banks when landlords are refinancing.

Businesses are increasingly prioritising sustainability and seeking energy-efficient premises to support their ESG strategies. Solar energy for tenants provides commercial landlords with a crucial competitive edge, improving tenant retention and appealing to energy-intensive businesses looking to reduce their Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions.

To implement solar, what would the first step be?

The first step is assessing the properties’ roof spaces and forecasting power generation potential, cost savings, payback, and ROI. This should include funding illustrations and an environmental impact review showing potential carbon reduction.

There is a range of funding models that will enable commercial landlords to implement an energy-efficient upgrade like a Centreco solar energy system, with repayments covered through energy savings or income.

Centreco’s comprehensive end-to-end service ensures a seamless transition, providing consistency, reliability and minimal disruption to your business from start to finish.

Are there other EPC-related upgrades commercial landlords can take?

Yes absolutely. For commercial landlords, improving EPC ratings isn’t just about compliance, it’s an opportunity to build a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship with tenants.

Once renewable energy is in place, landlords can progressively enhance their energy strategy tailored to the needs of their properties and tenants. These upgrades might look like the installation of heat pumps, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems (HVAC) or energy storage solutions to enable landlords and tenants to store excess solar energy.

Centreco is part of Certas Energy a leading UK independent distributor of energy products and, a division of DCC plc, a FTSE 100 global services group driving energy transition through its Cleaner Energy In Your Power strategy.

This means customers can access the full range of alternative power generation solutions, energy consultancy, metering and monitoring and net zero journey planning for the longer term. Even for more complex scenarios like limited gas access or reliance on oil or LPG, we can provide tailored solutions including alternative low-carbon fuels.

What should commercial landlords take from the proposed Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) regulation changes

Commercial landlords who delay, risk financial and regulatory setbacks. A strategic approach not only boosts EPC ratings but also cuts costs, attracts tenants, and safeguards property value – it makes good business sense.

With expert guidance and a clear energy strategy, landlords can turn EPC compliance from a challenge into an opportunity that delivers lasting financial and sustainability benefits.
